Updated Version – 1984 Summer Olympics, Torch relay and memories of Princess Anne at Disneyland

The 1984 Olympic torch relay began in New York City and ended up in Los Angeles, California traveling through 33 states and the District of Columbia. The route covered more than 9,320 miles and involved 3,616 runners including 200 from sponsoring companies.

In 1984, my son was 1 year old and I had taken him early in the morning to see the Olympic Torch relay.  The route had the runners  carrying the torch up Katella Avenue in Anaheim.  The early morning relay had the runners passing us at 7:30 am,  our key spot was just in front of the Anaheim Convention Center.

The Anaheim Convention Center was also the venue for the Summer Olympic Wrestling events.

Sam the Olympic Eagle is the mascot of the 1984 Summer Olympics which were held in Los Angeles.  He is a bald eagle, which is the national bird of the United States, where the games were held….makes sense right.  He also shares the name of Uncle Sam, another American symbol.  Sam was designed by Disney Legend Bob Moore, an artist for Disney.  This is sometimes confused for Eagle Sam, the host of the former Disneyland attraction America Sings.

In 1984, I was working at Disneyland as a VIP Tour Guide in Guest Relations. The Queen’s daughter, the Princess Royal, Princess Anne the only daughter of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip traveled to Southern California for the Summer Olympics.  I had the good fortune of meeting Princess Anne and escorting her through Disneyland park for the day.

Her Royal Highness was an absolute delight and enjoyed her outing at Disneyland.

  1. Gerald Logue says:

I remember the Olympics and Torch Run in the summer of 1984, the summer between 8th grade and my freshman year in high school, certainly one of the best summers of my life. I remember watching the Torch Run from Brea, it went up Brea Boulevard, and I watched it from City Hall Park, where the Brea Plunge is. My other really signifigant Olympic memory of that summer is my mom taking me to an Olympic baseball game. The other thing I really remember is listening to the radio, it seemed like they played “I Love L.A.” by Randy Newman every hour…
